Ghost and Spirits are indeed real. All living things are energy based, you, me, plants, animals all filled with energy. Energy is what the soul is, and it is what spirits and ghosts are. The Spirit world is real and coincides with the physical world. There are many people that have experiences with Spirits and Ghosts and like you are afraid that it is all in your head. The truth is that as a Professional Psychic and Medium I have had many experiences with Ghosts, Spirits, Exorcisms/Cleansings etc....
Most ghost/spirit are positive forces of energy and many times when people have experience see, feel, sense or hear spirits, ghosts there is usually always a reason why they have shown themselves. It could be that they are just looking for acknowledgement for a person to see them or it could be that they show themselves as a message or sign for the person who sees them.
Most scientists,you know are going to dismiss ghosts and the whole paranormal subject as non-sense.There is probably an equal amount of skeptics and non-skeptics.So there is no way to know if ghosts is make belief or real,because there is no scientific proof if the do,or do not exists.
Spiritualists believe that they do have scientific proof of evidence of ghosts.They videotaped people,and photographed people as they were dieing,and they believe that they captured the spirit leaving the human body on film.They watched somebody die from what I saw,and a mysterious fog-like substance was leaving the persons body,and it completly went away in about 4 hours.It is pretty amazing.A lot of scientists say that it is just another hoax,but it has not been proven one way or another.I think that they may have something there.
Many people who believe in science never believes ghosts and spirits because science and religion clashes. In Muslim religion ghosts are to be said as Genes, in Christianity they are said as spirits and in Hinduism they are called as Atmans.
The best reason to make people believe that spirits are present is by energy. The best physician of all time, Albert Einstein has proven that spirits exist. He has said that energy can't be made or can't be destroyed. It can only be transformed from one form to another. He has given us a clue. Let's think for a moment. What happens to the energy within us when we die? Yes, the energy inside our body never dies. Our body dies and decomposes but not our soul and spirit. So, when people die, their spirits are left over in this world. Spirits have a parallel world to us. They want to communicate with us and want to come back to our world. This is why spirits try to communicate with people. They posses on people.
